Lier is a small city in Belgium. It is situated not far from Antwerp, where the Grote and Kleine Nete flow together.Not many people visit it, and that is a pitty. Because Lier has a lot to offer. The city has one of the nicest flemish beguinages, many small houses in pitoresque streets. Also worth a visit is the Zimmertoren, a tower filled with clocks and astronomical devices.

Lier is not very big, as mentioned. It has an area of 4.970 ha, in which 32.454 people (15.747 men and 16.707 women) live.
The highest point is +15 m, and the lowest +4 m. (Not a big task to climb the hills here)
The name Lier is said to come from some old words meaning road and passage.
