Zuid-Holland, a great place to live and enjoy - Provincie Zuid-Holland

Zuid-Holland is a very divers province. You will find big cities here like Rotterdam and Den Haag, but also the Groene Hart (Green Heart, a green area in the middle of the Randstad .) Gonnie was born in Zevenhoven a small village in the northeast of Zuid-Holland. Noordeinde, where we live now was once part of Zevenhoven. Untill 1990 Zevenhoven was an independent municipality. Then national government thought the small municipalities had no future. And we were forced to combine with Nieuwveen to form a new municipal called Liemeer (after a road connecting the two). This municipal has only 6700 inhabitants is now under pressure again.

Nieuwkoopse Plassen

More nature can be found in Nieuwkoop. The most famous tourist place in our area is known for its lakes, Nieuwkoopse Plassen .
The lakes were formed when peat was won here. They digged so deep for the brown gold, as the fuel was then called, untill water filled the holes and the area was threathened in its exsistance. The windmills like the 4 still working in Aarlanderveen milled the area dry except for the Nieuwkoopse Plassen, which are now a nature conservation area.

One of the most underrated places in Zuid Holand is Aarlanderveen. It has the only working 4 step windmills in the world.
