Florence, city full of art

by tompt - last update: Mar 5, 2005

How difficult can it be to go to Florence?

The first time we booked a trip to Florence was in october 2002. The day before our flight to Bologna the travelagency called. Due to a strike from the airtraffic control our friday morning flight was cancelled. The next availlable flight to Bologna was on saturday night. But to fly at night, then take a train to Florence means we would only have the sunday to discover this great city full of art.
the Meridiana plane

So we tried again in february 2003. This time we were lucky to find a direct flight to the Amerigo Vescupicci airport in Florence. When we arrived at the gate at Schiphol airport, we saw this plane with a white patch. What has happened? Had this plane had any troubles? Bumped into to something? We were laughing when we made up all this.
Not worried by any thing we went on board.
The service was great and we had a nice view from the window. The alps were covered in snow and soon we were above Italy. The plane began descenting and all was ready to land at Florence airport. But then suddenly we made a sharp turn and the plane climbed again.
It seemed like eternity before the captain told a long story (in italian), from which the only
things we understood were: hydrolic braking system, Pisa and bus. It were the only words
the captain understood himself too.... In english it was only two sentences:
We have problems with the hydrolic brakes, Pisa has a longer runway. A bus will bring you
from Pisa to Florence.

And that is just what happened. We landed safely at Pisa airport. The firetrucks were
there, but they didn´t have to come into action. And after all of us collect our bags we were
escorted to a bus that drove us to Florence.
Ponte Vecchio

So we finally made it..
And the first thing we did was walking through the city centre taking pictures.

I think the Medici moved to Palazzo Pitti from Palazzo Vecchio and not from the Uffizi. Check it. Good page!

Very glad you included Costa San Giorgio area, almost no one explores there and it is so refreshing after the confines of the medieval disneyland that is Florence!
