Getting TO/AROUND: If you have read the intro you will understand we were not amused. When we turned up at the airport to go back home there was a strike going on. All Alitalia flights were cancelled untill 6. Our flight at 5 was the last flight to Amsterdam, so no way to get home and to work the next day. This costed us a vacationday, a hotelroom for one night and an extra trip to the airport (2x 19 Euro).

Italy is famous for its strikes. This was our second italian city, and the second time we were effected by a strike........

Alitalia is a nice airline to fly with though. Just don't fly when we do ;-)))

Getting TO/AROUND: Every half hour there is a non stop train between the Fiumicino International Airport (also know as Leonardo da Vinci Airport) and the city. This line is called the Leonardo da Vinci Express. It travels to the Termini Station. In front of this station many busses leave for other areas in the city. The metro also travels from here.

The train ride will take about 30 minutes for the 33 kilometer the airport is located from Rome.

It costed us (in january 2004) 9,50 Euro per person, one way trip.
But a taxi to the city centre will cost approx 45 Euro.

Getting TO/AROUND: Rome has good public transport and if you like to walk, like we do, you can reach all major sites by foot. It takes an hour to walk from the Coloseum to the Vatican. And that is one of the longest distances.

A car will not be a clever option, traffic is chaotic and parking almost impossible. And if you find a place where it is not allowed to park, they will surely give your car a wheel clamp. (see picture)
The majority of Roman streets is payed parking!

Getting TO/AROUND: If you want something romantic take a horse and carriage tour through Rome. You will find carriages at the tourist hot spots like the Colloseum or the Trevi fountain.

Getting TO/AROUND: Public transport in Rome is quit good. There are two subway lines, many busses and even trams.
If you want to know more about public transport in Rome look at the website of the transportcompany ATAC. They have much info, also in english.
