Our first trip of 2004, a weekend to Rome. We arrived on friday and had an afternoon to get our first taste of this ancient city. Ofcourse we walked to the most famous sites like the Colloseum. The next two days we walked and walked to see more of the city. And on monday morning we visited the things we just had to see before we left. But then, when we arrived at the airport something strange was going on. Our flight was not on the board.... In fact there was no Alitalia flight sceduled at all. After a short time we knew, there was a strike going on and we could forget to go home that day. Then the organising starts, calling work, cancelling appointments, call our family and so on. We went back to our hotel and our room was still free, so we spend another night and tried to make the best of our extended weekend.
We made (too) many pictures, so we had to put some in travelogues at our Lazio page. |

Rome was built on 7 hills over 2700 years ago. Now 3 million people live in one of the oldest the cities in the world. Since it was founded it was always inhabited and had enormous influence on the world. First as the centre of the Roman Empire and later as the centre of the Roman Catholic Church. Many european languages are based on the latin, and many jurisdiction and political systems are based on the roman model.
The legend tells that the king of Alba threw his twin nephews Romulus and Remus in the river. They washed ashore and were suckled by a wolf. When they grew up Romulus founded the city Rome in 753 before Christ.
Rome has still many monuments from over 2000 years ago, a period the city was one of the most powerfull in the world.

The popes lived and ruled in Rome for centuries. But today the pope lives in his own souverine state: Vatican, which is inside the city limits of Rome. And if you are in Rome you have to visit there. More will be on our Vatican page, after we finished this page.
