| Ngorongoro crater from a viewpoint |
The Ngogongoro crater is the largest unbroken caldera in the world. The crater is 610 meter deep and has an area of 260 sq km. It is believed that Ngorongoro once rivaled Kilimanjaro in size. The lava that filled the volcano formed a solid lid, which collapsed when the molten rock subsided, forming the caldera that we see today. The crater is part of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where you will also find the Olduvai Gorge. There you can see the remains of early man discovered by Mary and Louis Leakey. The Conservation Area has the wall of the Great Rift Valley as its eastern boundary, while its western boundary is the world-famous Serengeti National Park. The Conservation Area is listed on the Unesco World Heritage List since 1979. |

Wildlife There are 25,000 larger animals in the crater, mostly zebra and wildebeest. As all they need is in the crater (enough water and food) they stay here all year long. The crater is a good place to see black rhino and prides of lions. Other animals here include: leopard, cheetah, hyena, elephants, warthog, impala, buffalo, hartebeest, eland and lots of other members of the antelope family and smaller mammals of sorts. In the lake you will find many flamingo and other waterbirds. More than 100 birdspecies not found in the Serengeti have been found in the crater. |

Activities and Lodging Activities in the crater include bird watching, photography and game viewing from a 4 wheel drive vehicle.
All the lodges are located on the crater rim offering amazing views over and into the crater. The one we stayed in, the Ngorongoro wildlife lodge, offers a crater view from every room. |
