Amboseli is a relatively small gamepark in the shadow of Africas highest mountain, the Kilimanjaro. The Amboseli Park was established in 1968 and became a National Park in 1974. Amboselli covers an area of 392 sq km. There are five main wildlife habitats: open plains, acacia woodland, rocky thorn bush country, swamps and marshland. A temporary lake, Lake Amboseli, floods during years of heavy rainfall.

| these vultures are lucky the zebra forgot to drink |
We visited the park in a dry period. (rains are in april/may and november /december)
There was absolutely no water in lake Amboselli. When driving on the sandy lakefloor we encountered several zebra, that died of thirst.
Our guide told us that young inexperienced zebra forget to drink enough before wandering a long way from water, and they simply don't make it back to the water.
There was enough water in Amboseli when we were there, in the marshlands and the swamps. |
| sunset in Africa is always great |
It was not good for the zebra he didn't find this water before the sunset, but other animals (like the vultures) benefited from the zebras poor judgement.
We stayed in the Amboseli Park for two nights, made sunrise and sunset gamedrives, and relaxed near the Amboseli lodge.

madamx Wed Mar 8, 2006 04:47 UTC Excellent Amboseli page! The pictures of the Masia were very interesting. Do you think going to the Masai village is worthwhile, or do you think it's too commercial? ~ Helen | Jim_Eliason Sun Dec 18, 2005 18:02 UTC Looks like it was a fantastic adventure! | filipdebont Sat Feb 12, 2005 10:57 UTC Great wildlife pics (as usual), looks like a great park to visit. | irisbe Wed Dec 1, 2004 20:12 UTC Prachtig!
