Belgium, just south of Netherlands

by tompt - last update: Apr 9, 2007

Belgium is a small country, just south of our own. Because we are neighbours there are all sort of jokes about Belgium. Belgians are supposed to be stupid. The ones i know are just normal people. But when i visit Belgium i am in doubt again. See the picture above and you will get the meaning. In which country can you find a sign for disabled to ring a bell somewhere high up. (Actually i can't find the bell at all)

More of these odd facts, to be puzzled by or laugh about, in our general tips.

The strangest thing about this tiny country is that they speak several languages. When you travel through Belgium you will find signposts to Luik, Liége and Lüttich , which is the same city!

See Bruges by boat

Visit one of Belgiums old cities

Brugge is a city full of historic buildings. We visited Brugge five times and still haven't seen everything. More about this trips can be found on our Brugge page.
More info on the internet: http://www.brugge.be

Another fine city to visit is Antwerp. Antwerp has also a nice citycentre with several ancient buildings. We visited Antwerp to join VT meetings. And will probably visit again to see more of the city.
More about the meetings on our Antwerp page.
More on the internet: http://www.visitantwerpen.be/

Another great (according to people who live there the greatest) city is Ghent. Ghent is defenitely underrated as a tourist destination. We only visited Ghent once. Local VT member Luc guided us through his beautifull city. It made us want to go back sometime. Pictures of our first visit are on our Gent page. More on the internet: http://www.gent.be/

Not as well known is the small city of Lier. Not on the usual tourist path, but absolutely worth visiting for a day. Lier is famous for the Zimmer wonderclock, a clock with so many different dials it will dazzle you. It gives everything you could imagine like time, date, tides, lunar and stellar fases and more...
Visit our Lier page or More on the internet at: http://www.lier.be

Then there is ofcourse the capital city Brussels (or Bruxelles). Not looking very appealing, because of the massive office buildings for the European Union and other official institutes. But look a bit further and you will see some great things, not only the Markt but also parks, and great architecture.
More at our Brussels page, or on the internet at http://www.opt.be/Langue/en/bxl/index.htm
forest near Postel

Natural beauty

Belgium is also a country of great natural beauty. There is the Ardennes region, where the hills looks like real mountains to our dutch eyes. It is great to do some biking or hiking there. For many years Tom participated in the tour version of the bicyclerace Luik - Bastenaken - Luik . This tourversion is 215 km long and has all the major climbs the Ardennes offer. This bicycle tour is in a weekend and we always rented a holiday house with some good friends.

But there are also nice forests in Flanders, near the abbey of Postel for instance. We did vist there on a sunny sunday afternoon march 2003. See the details of the walk and the (abbey) beer afterwards at our Postel page.

There are even Flanders Ardennes, which we visited with our friend Filip.
More about this area can be found at our Provincie Oost-Vlaanderen page.
