Favorite thing: The Pompano Beach Seafood Festival
The Annual Pompano Beach Seafood Festival takes full advantage of Pompano's oceanfront setting and is held directly on the beach at the end of April each year. The Festival features fresh local seafood prepared in a variety of ways by area restaurants plus continuous musical entertainment, arts and crafts and a children's play area. This two-day event, which is fun for the entire family, attracts nearly 100,000 people. More than 50 charities benefit from the proceeds of the Seafood Festival.
One of the highlights of the Festival weekend is the spectacular sinking of a derelict freighter as an artifical reef by the Pompano Beach Fishing Rodeo. More than twenty vessels and other approved materials have been sunk to date to create new underwater habitat for fish and marine life
Pompano Beach Fishing Rodeo
The Pompano Beach Fishing Rodeo is South Florida's largest saltwater fishing tournament held annually the second full weekend of May. The tournament offers more than $100,000 in cash and prizes to be won in numerous categories by boat teams, junior anglers, female anglers, and family fishing teams. The tournament also features a billfish Release division and the popular drift fishing division. More than 250 boats and 600 fishermen participate anually in the nationally recognized fishing event. The Fishing Rodeo supports its artificial reef program and award-winning summer marine science program, Project: Ocean Exploration at Ely High School.
Holiday Boat Parade
Another fabulous yearly boating event set in Pompano Beach is the Holiday Boat Parade, the nation's oldest boat parade. Nearly 100 glittering yachts and smaller boats delight the thousands of people who watch from the shores of the Intracoastal Waterway beginning at Lake Santa Barbara in Pompano Beach north to Deerfield Beach.
