The secret to discovering its romance and beauty is to walk.- Venice is built on 117 small islands and has some 150 canals and 400 bridges.- Only 3 bridges cross the Grand Canal: the Rialto, the Accademia and the Scalzi.- The city is divided into in 6 ssections: Cannaregio, Castello, San Marco, Dorsoduro, San Polo and Santa Croce.- Streets are called "calle", side streets can be called "caletta", a street beside a canal is a "fondamenta", a canal is a "rio" and a quay a "riva".- The only square in Venice called a piazza is "San Marco", all the others are called "campo".- There are no cars in the city and all the public transport is via the canals on "vaporetti".- |
