Corregidor Island, "The Rock" Do you know that Corregidor is still part of the province of Cavite? (I didn't know that..until our tour guide mentioned it.) It is a tadpole-shaped rock island, the largest (with an area of 1,735 acres and about 4 miles long) of 5 islands (the other 4 are La Monja,Caballo,El Fraille and Carabao) between Bataan and Cavite shores. Some geologists theorize that Corregidor was once part of a huge volcano that erupted on one side and gradually eroded to become partly invisible beneath the sea.
Corregidor Island is called "The Rock" because it served as the major bastion of Philippine's Allies during WWII. It was the site of the most popular battles of World War II. Going there would make us appreciate better the freedom that our forefathers bravely fought for. Corregidor was renamed "Fort Mills" by the Americans, but it remains to be referred to as Corregidor,The Rock |

My mother's older sister (my aunt Ginny) served as a US Army Nurse on Corregidor just ahead of the Japanese invasion. She was one of the last persons evacuated, she spent the war in Australia and New Guinea. |
