Mariehamn was founded in 1861 while Åland and Finland formed part of the mighty Russian Empire.

Most of the tourist arrive to Marieham by ferries. There are two shipping companies who all year round. It´s easy to travel from finland or Sweden the trip only takes about 5-6 hours, depending if your comin from Stockholm (sweden) or Turku (finland). Ferries arrive to the western-harbour of Mariehamn. Here is a picture over the western harbour, with a ferrie leaving.
