"Camping" Kirkjubæjarklaustur by gunna1

The camping site is 2,5 kilometres outside of the village of Kirkjubæjarklaustur.

A beautiful waterfall is close by and when the sun shines the water warms up making it an ideal natural swimming pool. At the site there are toilets, running water, tables and benches and a soccer field. In the village all other services are obtainable, a grocery store, a restaurant and a swimming pool. Many marked hiking trails are in the area, leading to interesting sights. For instance there is the “Church Floor”, a strange phenomenon east of the village where “stuðlaberg” a special kind of rock formation has lined up evenly making it appear to be made by men.
Another site of interest in the area is Systrastapi, or “sisters rock”. Legend has that this is the burial ground of two nuns who had been sentenced to burn at the stake for violating vice laws. When Iceland turned protestant, it is said that over the grave of one of the nuns flowers started to appear. This was believed to be proof of her innocence. No flowers appeared over the grave of the other nun. If you are a reasonably adept climber, the view from the rock is magnificent.
