Dentists a plenty

This little town along the river is pretty small - one main strip with some stores all selling the same stuff and about 6 different dentists (all of these small towns had a lot of dentists!). this fascinated me, i wanted to go inside but was a little afraid of what i might see. each sign was similar to this one, featuring a tooth and a set of teeth.

our mission - go out on a canoe

The main goal of our day was to find Henry Taylor ( a miskito indian living in Ayalpa) to take us on a canoe to the caves down river. We left el cua early and drove the 1 1/2 hours to Bocay - where our lonely planet book said we could find Taylor. no luck ... he lives another 30 km down the road in Ayalpa. It took us another 1 1/2 hours to go the 30 km. We finally found the canoes only to be greeted with the bad news that a) Henry Taylor was a drunk and we shouldn't try to find him and b) the river was way too low to navigate to the caves - but it sure was an adventure to get to this place!

circling the river

well, we figured if we came all this way to go in a canoe, then we were going to go in a canoe. this guy took us on a quick lap around the docking area - all eyes upon us as i don't think too many tourists pass through this town and we were definately acting like tourists!
