Today´s Antakya is located at the site of the ancient city of Antioch on the Orontes. In 638 Antioch was conquered by the Arabs, but 969 by the Byzantines. During the 12th and 13 Century Antioch remained in the hands of the Crusaders until 1268 it was finally conquered by the Mamluks. They destroyed the city so badly that it never regained more important.
