It was the Armenian capital from 180 to 340 when Christianity was inrtduced to Armenia. Today it's a small town built around the Mayr Tachar (Mother Church of Armenia) first built in303 and rebuilt 480 with more work and extensions in the 7., 17. and 18. century, behind the palace of the Catholicos is off limits.
