Hey Krung Thep!

by YaaDong - last update: Sep 7, 2009

Bangkok is a huge city with a population of over 6,000,000 people. It's big, crowded and polluted. It's a concrete jungle of modern high rises mingled with old shop houses and wooden shacks.Bangkok is a city of contrast were you may find yourself walking through one of it's peaceful temples or the many crowded shopping street and Malls. It's noisy and dirty so don't breath too deeply or just stick a couple of inhalers in your nose,Thai style. At times there seem to be a permanent gray haze hanging over the city but when the sun shines onto a temple. It's brilliant ! You will see people on the move in cars, buses and those little funky scooters at all hours of the day and night, however you better not be in a hurry. A traffic jam at 1am is a normal sight but so is the stillness of an empty road when the Royal Family goes by with a 20 car convoy. When the sun shines you can get an instant tan but in the next minute you can be in a freezing cold department store or cinema wishing you had made more of an effort to cover yourself up. During the monsoon season when it rain it pours and streets or Sois can become an extention of the Chao Phraya river. There are many touristy things to do in Bangkok but if you get a chance take a walk off the main roads .You may not find anything special but it will often be very relaxed and very Thai..
