As with any country, pickpocketing does happen frequently. The best way to protect yourself is to wear a waste pouch UNDER a tunic or loosely hanging garment to keep your wallet, etc. Make sure the pouch is at the front, not your back. I have known people to be unaware of anything untoward until, later on, they discover that the bottom of their purse or bag has been skillfully sliced with surgical precision unawares! It can happen anywhere where you are jostled or packed in tight. It doesn't normally happen in situations where you are not part of a crowd. Also, carry traveler's cheques - never large amounts of money.
