Burma lies between the Tibetan plateau and the Malayan peninsula. Mountain ranges to the east, north and west surround a central valley where the Irrawaddy, Sittang and Salween rivers flow. Most of the population are concentrated in this area where rice is grown. The climate is tropical with monsoon rains between May and October. Rainforests extend over most of the country. Deforestation has been responsible for the destruction of two-thirds of the country’s tropical forest.
