"A Wombat in Chemnitz" Chemnitz by Russell_the_Wombat

Chemnitz Travel Guide: 138 reviews and 628 photos

Chemnitz is one of those places that few travellers have on their schedule. One of those places that take some digging to find their treasures. Well, wombats are experts in digging, so I enjoy destinations like that in particular. This involves a lot of strolling in the streets to see what you find, and of course taking lots of pictures.

Chemnitz is also a lesson in 20th century history. The DDR city is still present in lots of socialist architecture. Like it or not - I don't think these buildings are too pretty - but they are there and want to be understood.

Two decades since the reunification have lead to more transformations, especiaally in the city centre. Lots of funky shopping palaces have spread since then, and a lot of renovations embellished even the socialist buildings.

A bit further out we explored some quarters with pre-war architecture, historism and art nouveau. I learned about the age of industrialization when Chemnitz grew into a large, busy and wealthy city. We even visited the villa of a rich factory owner who employed a freaky but famous architect to design his new home.

But they have really old stuff in and around Chemnitz, too! This funky castle is on the outskirts of the city, a rather long tram ride from the centre. Luckily Mommy had done some reading in advance and knew about it.

As usual, I am posting the photos and the comments a wombat can do. If you want proper tips about the city, please visit Mommy's Chemnitz page.
