"York: a living museum" York by Ricmenoli

York is an enchanting small, walled city in the county of North Yorkshire in northeastern England. The city's history dates back to nearly two thousand years ago when the Romans set in the banks of River Ouse. After the arrival of the Angles and their dominion over the site, the city was then conquered by the Vikings coming from present day Denmark in the 9th century. The Vikings renamed the city to Jórvík from which the name "York" is supposedly derived, and their influence can still be found and felt in the city as for instance in the city's street names. York has also preserved a lot of its original medieval structure. This peculiarity gives the city a strong medieval feel and one feels like travelling back in time or entering inside a living museum when walking through some of its narrow picturesque streets filled with wooden houses. There are a lot of interest sites in York and as the city is small it is very, very easy to walk around pleasently throughout its streets while appreciating the beautiful sights the city has to offer as well as its many small shops. Two of the most renowed attractions in York are the absolutely stunning York Minster and at the top of a green hill Clifford's Tower. York also has a vibrant and lively motion into it and by the time I visited the city (late July) a lot of people was gathered near the River Ouse drinking and eating during the long afternoons/evenings enjoying the mild summer weather. A vibrant nightlife was also going on in the city's many pubs and clubs. In resume: York is like entering a living museum from which one doesn't want ever to leave.
