A beautiful little village

Vila Nogueira de Azeitão is a very little village about 30 km south of Lisbon located in the Setúbal Peninsula near the city of Setúbal and on the feet of the Serra da Arrábida. Its history can be traced back to the Middle Ages though only in the 18th century the site was raised to the status of village by Queen's Mary I royal charter. Although the village and its surrounding country areas is attracting more and more permanent residents apart its original population, many Lisbon's inhabitants hold there country houses to which they travel during the weekends and on holidays time. The village is located near Serra da Arrábida's protected natural landscapes and fabulous beaches, such as Portinho da Arrábida, which are popular summer destinations for city dwellers coming from nearby towns such as Lisbon, Setúbal, Almada and others. The region of Azeitão is also widely known for its wines and for its traditional gastronomic delicacies such as Azeitão's cheese and Azeitão's pie. In a sentence: a very enjoyable place which mixes history, country, beaches and a very tasteful gastronomy.
