Of course a visit to the Coliseum is a highlight of Rome. We joined the queue (which was huge) and guys came up and down the line asking if anyone wanted to join a guided tour. They misleadingly gave the impression that you would jump the line if you joined them which wasn't strictly true because we did join them and then stood outside the Coliseum in the sun for another 35 minutes listening to the guide do his spiel where if we had stayed in the line we would have been inside long before. However, when he eventually took us in we did by-pass what was left of the line to go in.

Our tour guide for the Coliseum was Romearound Tours. £18 which included your fee into Coliseum and Palatine Hill. The first part of the tour our guide was Italian and you really had to concentrate hard to understand him but he was pretty entertaining. He told us how in the first hundred days that the Coliseum opened 5000 wild animals where killed and 2000 men. They flooded they Coliseum twice to try and have battleship games in there but it proved to be not big enough so they flooded what is now Piazza Navona instead.

The Coliseum had a retractable roof in its heyday made from sails on pullies that the slaves could open to let the smell of decaying corpses and sweaty gladiators out. Don't even get me started on the toilet facilities. Senetors and important guys would have slaves sitting on the marble toilet hole keeping it warm for them till they needed to sit on it. At their feet was a little gutter with water in with sponges floating that they could use to wash their bums. Lovely!

The Spanish Steps are in the Piazza di Spagna. They are a famous tourist attraction in Rome. When you climb to the top you will find many street artists touting for business. Buy a gelato and take a breather people watching on the steps.

The Santa Maria Maggiore dates back to the 5th century. It has gorgeous mosaics. It is lovely and cool and calming to spend an hour in this beautiful Basilica. You can hire an audio guide at the door and listen at your own pace to very interesting commentry.

Piazza Navona is the lovliest Piazza in Rome in my humble opinion. It's filled with cafe's, street performers, artists. It's centrepiece is the famous Bernini Fountain of Four rivers. I could spend hours mooching around this Piazza.

This is the Sixteen Chapel inside the Santa Maria Maggiore. The gold dome that my husband Steve is looking at is a little model of the Chapel. You may need to click on it and enlarge to get a proper look.

We spent an afternoon here as we didn't have time to see it last year when I was on my "Angels and Demons" location tour. We walked up the internal ramp before I decided that I needed the loo and had to walk all the way down again. (Tip ladies.. No loo's past those near the entrance!!) Anyhoo.. Great views of the city and St Peters, lovely cool breeze, well worth the climb.
