Chernivtsy has a perfectly conserved Art Nouveau theatre built 1905 by the Viennese architects Fellner and Helmer (the same theatre was built on other places, for example in Fuerth, Germany) but this one remained completely unchanged for 100 years, irrespectively of all the changes around it (first the performances were given in German, after WW 1 in Romanian, after WW 2 in Russian and now in Ukrainian) It is still the same authentic Austrian Art Nouveau theatre, better perserved than anything like that elswhere - in Austria all these treasures were bombed during WW 2 and all perfect reconstruction could not recall the original atmosphere as it is unspoilt here).

All the area around the theatre gives you the impression of a sleepy provincial Austrian town about 50 or more years ago.

Things To Do: The Architect did not drink too much Tuica

This is the main Romanian church in Chernivtsi (Cernauti in Romanian). The both twisted towers were not designed under the influence of too much Tuica (very popular Romanian prune destillate) but an attempt to imitate after 1920 the old church of Curtea de Arges in Oltenia to attribute that way Chernivtsy somewhat more "Romanian" identity when Romania got this city and the whole Bucovina after WW 1 from the former Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Things To Do: The University

The university was the last one which was founded in the entire Habsburg empire 127 years ago. A part of it is still in the original buildings but the main seat of it is now the former Residence of the Orthodox Metropolite of the Bukovina and Dalmatia. It is a fascinating eclectic mix of different styles, in parts reminding of an Oxford College, in others a Byzantine palace. It was designed by the Czech architect Hlavka.

All the nationalities living in Chernivtsy (Czernowitz, Czernowce, Cernauti) built their cultural centres around 1900, you find still today a Jewish, Polish, Romanian, German and Ukrainian centre and all are still active.

Things To Do: The Town Hall

The Town Hall reminds strongly traditional Polish Town Halls. No wonder, the Bucovina was under the first decades of its Austrian time part of Galicia which was dominated by the Polish - and the architects of the Town Hall were of Polish origin, too.

Things To Do: Some Gems Around the Town Hall

Chernivtsy is preparing the celebration of its 600 years anniversary and is renovating the whole centre for that. There are virtually no architectonic traces from the first 400 years left, all the precious historic architectural legacy is from 19th century, the Austrian time and Chernivtsy is quite a typical example of a at this time prosperous and self-confident Austrian city of bougeois citizens - there are (other than for example in L'viv) no nobility palaces here. Chernivtsy was at this time a sorts of progressive island in a Sea of backwardness. This Sea flooded the city under the Romanian royal and fascist (Antonescu) rule after WW 1 when the discrimination of the (German speaking) Jews, Germans and Ukrainians started which culminated from the beginning of WW 2 with expulsions and deportations (under which the Romanians played an auxiliary role supporting depending of the changes of war both the Nazis and the Soviets).
