A place not to be missed when in Chernivtsy is the impressive fortified town Kamenets-Podilski. On a late Summer day in 1996 I was the only one tourist at this outstanding place! Unfortunately this has changed significantly. I was here again five years later (in late September 2001) and now the town was filled with tourist groups, just as you can expect it at any place of comparable interest. But it looks now better, too. Much of it has been carefully renovated, for example the town hall and the Roman-Catholic church.
Centuries older than Chernivtsy, several times changing hands between Christians (of different confessions) and Muslims, without any doubt one of the historically most interesting sites of the whole Ukraine. Very picturesque its situation on a steep rock which is surrounded in an almost complete circle by a loop of the Smotrych river. |
