Some of my friends claim that Kaunas is the "most Lithuanian" city of the 3 big ones Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipeda. Maybe because the both others have a considerable fraction of non-Lithuanian inhabitants (mainly Polish in Vilnius and a "vsyesoyuznyi" ("all-Union") mix of Russians, Caucasians and Uzbeks etc, in Klaipeda). But I found all three cities and all others I saw in Lithuania perfectly Lithuanian, other than the Soviet mix dominating in cities like Narva in Estonia or Daugvapils in Latvia where itis quite difficult to identify any real Estonians resp. Latvians.
For me personally Kaunas was the first Lithuanian city I saw on my first visit of Lithuania in 1992 - see also my Lithuania page for that. And I found this city really nice. Maybe not as rich in interesting buildings as Vilnius and clearly much nicer than the smaller but more dynamic Klaipeda |
