Idyllic Town near the Bavarian Border Domažlice is the centre of Chodsko, a historical frontier region of Bohemia. The Chods, a Slavonic group, the inhabitants of this region, had in the Middle Ages the duty to watch the Bohemian frontier. For this they got a lot of privileges from the Bohemian kings which were granted by the Chodsko letters. These were tax privileges, the farmers were the owners of their territories etc. As an official sign of their special position the old Coats of Arms of Domažlice has shown a watchdog. |
Domažlice reminds a bit of Telc. But instead of ponds and lakes there are the dark forests forming the Bohemian-Bavarian border around the town. And Domažlice looks a little less like a scene set up for a historical movie. And there are more tourists here. It is the only area all along today's frontiers of the Czech Republic towards Germany and Austria where there was always a clear Czech majority living in the area on the today Czech side along the border. |
