"Ponds, Carps and Pikes" Trebon by lotharlerch

Trebon is the center of an "amphibic" landscape of innumerable artificial ponds which are already up to 500 years old. It stretches into the the northernmost region of Austria, the "Waldviertel". The famous Bohemian Carps are produced here, maybe the oldest large scale fish farming in Europe. And since the carps need some training under stress to get the meat tasty a well balanced population of pikes is living with the carps in these ponds. The pikes are hunting for the carps and the less sportive ones are eaten by the pikes, the more sportive ones with the meat of well trained muscles are "harvested" from time to time the way that most of the water of a pond will be let out which makes the carps of the whole pond to concentrate in a very small area with the deepest water where is is very easy to fish some tons of carps in a very short time. Then these carps will live for a short time in small basins with clear water and absolutely no food to further improve the quality of the meat. Based upon the skills grown in half of a millenium of fish farming one has the guarantee to get really excellent fish.

This was the reason for us to plan a lunch stop in Trebon on our short tour through Southern Bohemia. Unfortunately we were in some hurry to reach Telc so we did not spend much time in Trebon except dropping into the restaurant next to our parking.
