Great Cross-Country Skiing

Telfs is not known for famous downhill slopes but you find plenty of them in a distance of about 30 km around and Telfs can therefore serve as a quite economic place to sleep and to go every day to the different skiing areas in about half an hour or less by car.
But what you find in top class are the excellently kept cross-country skiing tracks in all degrees of difficulty on the Seefeld - Mösern - Leutasch plateau, most of it belonging to the territory of Telfs community. There are more than 250 km of prepared, marked and excellently maintained tracks in all degrees of difficulty, a considerable part of them the original ones of the Winter Olympics in 1964 and 1976, and all that in a really great scenery, situated between 1100 and 1450 meters above sea level with good snow from mid-December to Easter. And all these tracks touch nice places to have snacks and drinks and substantial meals (you get very thirsty and quite hungry on the way!) in comfortable distances from each other. I hope to add pictures soon!

An interactive website (see below) shows you a map of the territory with all the tracks plus details about length, difference in level, degree of difficulty and much more plus actual snow news.

Equipment: Needless to say that you can hire excellent actual equipment everywhere in the area if you do not bring your own along. Some places for that are given on the website.

Directions: 15 minutes drive from the center of Telfs, bus connection.

About 20 km from my home - Telfs

Skiing far from skilifts

Skiing started in the Alps in late 19th century - without skilifts and funiculars, of course. But the more the Alps are exploited with all these means of transport the more people detect the charme of the "off-piste" skiing where you climb the tops on your own skis and can enjoy the virgin snow.

Equipment: You need on your skis a binding allowing to lift your heels while climbing (and under the skis "skins" preventing you from slipping backwards) and before going down again you remove these skins and fix your heels to the skis again.

It is important though always to consider the actual situation with respect to the avalanches which can change rapidly under the influence of snowfall, wind, temperature etc. Check it with the local warnings (radio and Alpenverein) and with experienced locals
