"Andalucía's Greatest Romeria" El Rocío by lotharlerch

El Rocío Travel Guide: 9 reviews and 45 photos

more than a million pilgrims participating

Under 360 days of the year El Rocío is a forgotten village with about 300 inhabitants. The dead and empty buildings lining the extremely wide sandy roads seem to be set up provisionally for a movie production of a Western. But under the Whitsun weekend the area fills up with well over a million of pilgrims coming from all Andalucia together with people of Andaluz origin from all Spain and even Latin America to meet here celebrating the great Romeria in honour of the Virgen de El Rocio. It is indeed one of the greatest festivities in Europe.

- and more than 5000 horses

-and innumerable ornated wagons

I hope to do that pilgrimage when I'm in Spain this spring. I'll be living in Seville during that time, so I'll be nearby.
