When I was starting to build my Brussels page I first printed Brussel (I did not print the "s" at the end of the name because the city has in Belgium officially both the French name Bruxelles and the Flemish name Brussel). So I expected to be immediately directed to the Belgian Capital City but it has shown only a Brussel in South Africa of which I never heard before while both Brussels and Bruxelles have shown me the Belgian Capital City.
To check whether it is VT policy I entered "Helsingfors" for the Finnish Capital city because this city has officially the both names Helsinki in Finnish and Helsingfors in Swedish and here the VT database shows in both cases the Finnish Capital. The only difference is that in Belgium Flemish is the language with the most native speakers, well above the half of the Belgians while in Finland the native speakers of Swedish are less than 8 % and Brussel /Bruxelles has clearly more Flemish speaking inhabitants than Helsinki/Helsingfors hosts native speakers of Swedish.
Of course I would not complain if there was no "Anvers" (French for Antwerpen) or "Doornik" (Flemish for Tournai) in the VT database because all these cities are clearly belonging to the Flemish or French region of Belgium respectively.
It happened me that I was directed to Africa when I was searching the Belgian Capital City under its official Flemish name and arriving here I do not find it such a strange idea to build a Brussel page in Africa - simply because Brussel IS very African. Just think of the neighbourhood Matongue around the Namsepoort or the Sunday market around the raiiway station Brussel Zuid. I admit, it is not South African but African anyway (everything from Morocco to Zaire). And is not the Manneken Pis on my pic quite black, too???
- Pros:other than Bruxelles/Brussels still off the beaten path
- Cons:did not find any
- In a nutshell:Both Brussel and Bruxelles/Brussels are very African
