airplane &airport: Dont fly to Alexandria

Getting TO/AROUND: has an international airport but it is incredibly small (same size as the one of Kittilä in Finnish Lapland but not that good quality architecture). The technical equipment is 3rd world standard. We could not take off due to some fog because there were totally insufficient runway lights which made it necessary to stay a day in the hotel in Alexandria and the next night on Frankfurt airport because all passengers missed their connecting flights, I came back home with 24 hours delay. But you can go via Cairo airport, and the train from Cairo to Alex is only 2 hours.

Getting TO/AROUND: To go around Alexandria take a taxi. They are cheap but agree about the fare before you enter the car, there are no meters. It might happen that your taxi (mostly a Soviet Lada, 20 to 25 years old), breaks down before you reach your destination. In this case give the driver a tip to make him stopping an other taxi for you (which mostly is not better than the one you just left). The drivers make incredible big and hectic movements with the steering wheel just to hold the car on a straight line along the Corniche. Safety belts can be spotted in the cars but I would not trust them, in one car I had a rusty peace of metal at the other end when I tried to close the lock....

Getting TO/AROUND: There are a few trams cruising through Alexandria, trains of three coaches, the middle one reserved for women only.
