The Holy City at the Silk Road

The other Must in Uzbekistan

"Samarkand is the beauty of the earth but Bukhara is the beauty of the spirit"

Samarkand might have the more spectacular buildings and it has with the Registan the "most noble square in the world". But it has also lots of Soviet concrete a bit too close to these beauties.

Both Samarkand and Bukhara are Tajik cities, inhabitated mainly by Tajiks, related to the Iranians and speaking a language very similar to Farsi, they live here together with Uzbeks, Russians and other nationalities. Both cities are far bigger and more important than any city in today's Tajikistan, a typical result of Stalin's creation of very arbitrary new adminitrative units called Socialist Soviet Republics. Uzbeks came much later to this area.

Bukhara has far better kept its mediaeval atmosphere than Samarkand, the old city is large enough to keep all the Soviet legacy sufficiently out. This makes it easily possible to imagine how the life was running here at the time of the old Silk road.

I do not want only to blame Russia and the Soviet Union for the bad what they did here. They have also done a lot for the benefit of the people in Central Asia so the balance of their activities here can clearly be seen far more positive than their only destructive activities in the areas under Russian and Soviet occupation in Europe.

In the centre of Bukhara one even does not notice the Soviet legacy at all and one can feel how Bukhara is developing back into its Islamic past.

Pros:"The most interesting atmosphere of all cities in Uzbekistan"
Cons:"dont know"
In A Nutshell:"more impressive than Samarkand"
