Tashkent is a Soviet island in Central Asia, at least as long as you are in the Soviet concrete areas of this town (the fourth biggest of the Soviet Union and the biggest Soviet one in Asia with more than 2 Millons of inhabitants). But after only a few stops ride with the Metro you can leave the former Soviet Union and arrive right in the heart of Central Asia, for example at the Chorsu market. The real fascination of Tashkent is the multicultural mix which reaches from Russians to Koreans and almost everything imagineable in between. But the Russians (and other "Europeans") became less visible at my second visit in 2002 as compared to my visit in 2000. And there are no indicators that this exodus stopped. I guess the Baltic states would be very happy if they could enjoy such an exodus of Russians.....

nilupilu Wed Oct 1, 2008 16:37 UTC The reason that it is forbidden to take pictures of the stations is probably because of the terrorist attacks in Tashkent. I think it was in Feb 16 of 2000 or 1999. I was too young to remember when I lived there. But there were bombings in the stations. | youssef09 Mon Sep 17, 2007 15:09 UTC hi, very nive & very important page, well done :!! greetings from so far ; | mrclay2000 Sat May 14, 2005 14:37 UTC A great page about one of the newcomers to our family of nations.
