BEECHWORTH..A WONDERFULLY PRESERVED GOLD TOWN

BEECHWORTH
When you drive into Beechworth one can't help but be taken by this old Victorian gold town. The town was settled in 1853 and not long after..gold was discovered and soon nearly 10,000 prospectors and miners were lining the creeks..known in Australia for many things a place with lots to see and do..There are more than thirty buildings here classified by the National Trust and is reputed to be the best preserved goldmining town in Victoria..A memorial stands to the large amount of Chinese that mined this area.."The Chinese Burning towers and Cemetery"stands on cemetery road..There are towers headstones and alters to over 1500 that are buried here...The Beechworth Gaol is where "Ned Kelly was held before his execution..The old stone building precinct holds much interest into the history of Beechworth...The shopping area has many shops that are painted in federation colours and the paint artwork is keeping with the period and looks so good...be sure to go to the tourist information when arriving.
