PARRAMATTA Hi.. and Paramatta is now where I live and hopefully can put some info forward that maybe of some help to a fellow VT traveller..
PARRAMATTA is located in the Western suburbs of Sydney and pretty well central to any of the transport system within greater Sydney..there is a ferry service from the "quay" which is the central ferry wharf in the city..The River Cat as it is known travels from the city up the Parramatta River and takes approximately 50 minutes..The trip is very relaxing as it is all within the protection of the harbour..These particular ferries with a shallow draft were built and put into service to handle the crowds that were here for the Olympic Games of 2000..the narrow draft was to minimise the wave "wash " and protect the ecology so that the shoreline damage was minimal as most is "muddy mangrove" ..
The journey from the city by road is an easy one of only 25 kilometers..A very good rail system services Parramatta and is very frequent and takes about 30 minutes..from the city these same trains can go as far as the Blue Mountains.. Katoomba and beyond..
There is many things to see and do in Parramatta and its history has played a large part in the first settlement of "Sydney Town(see my many tips)..The original Government House is located here and is the oldest public building in Australia...and has a really fine collection of early colonial furniture....Governor Phillip realised that the land in the (city) settlement was not good for the growing of crops..and this area with its very fertile soil was found to be excellent for the purpose....This area was named Rose Hill..it wasn't renamed Parramatta until later to acknowledge the "Burramatta" clan of the Darug aboriginals.. most of the food was grown in this area and transported to "Sydney Town" and that made the life in Sydney town possible ...there was water in the settlement but could not be found. ...The "tank stream" that runs under Sydney was not found for some years...There is much parkland here...lots of fine restaurants and outdoor cafes of all kinds and is a really popular shopping precinct with many shops and a very large "Westfield Shopping Centre"..(largest in the southern hemisphere)..for anyone needing some "retail therapy"in some 600 shops....When getting off the train at Parramatta you can go directly into the Westfield Shopping Centre by taking the southern exit..it is huge..
there are also some good pubs that serve reasonably priced meals and some also have live music..some other points of interest are ..
The Riverside Theatre...for performing arts and concerts..
The Military Lancer Barracks. and Museum.
The Parramatta City Raceway..has midget and stockcar racing..
Sydney Helicopters..scenic flights(closeby) at Granville..phone 9637-4455
Rosehill Gardens Racecourse..weekend horse racing.... phone 9930-4000
Cloud Nine Baloon flights.. phone 1300-555-711
Parramatta Football Stadium a Leagues Club.. all information can also be found at the Parramatta Heritage and Visitor Centre phone 8839-3311 or go to www.parracity.nsw.gov.au
also close by is The Western Sydney International Dragway (WSID) ..for lovers of drag racing... The Olympic Park site of the 2000 Olympic games.with the Olympic Aquatic centre also The Blue mountains National Park...there is something for everyone...whatever your interest may be...

Quite often here in Prince Alfred Park (one of Parramatta's parks) there are free concerts and relaxing music on Sundays ...This originally was known as Gaol Green and was the site of the first Gaol built here in 1797..but was renamed "Alfred Park" after the Royal visit of Queen Victorias son Alfred to Parramatta on the 12th of February 1868..

What now is the Parramatta Mall ..the centre of the Parramatta shopping precinct..was the site of the first market ever held in Australia which was held here on 12th January in 1813..and the first fair was also held here on the 11th March 1813...

I hope you are getting ready for season change down there. We are now getting a bit cooler-but in KC we had 45 days near 100 Farenheit-much too much. WE go to Germany for one month at end of September and then one week in BArcelona, where we pick up a cruise back to USA; taking 17 days to return. Excited-YEA

Nice introduction to your home town! I like the idea of the free Loop Bus around the CBD (= Central Business District?). This is an idea that other cities would do well to imitate, including oh-so-green Frankfurt where I live.
