Red dust ..Blue sky..can be very hot

Silverton Located in western New South Wales about 25 klm's from Broken Hill this small town is just a drop of its former self.
Known originally as Umberumberka got its name after a large deposit of silver and lead orewas discovered in 1880. This triggered a rush to the area of prospectors. Once again in 1883 another find was exposed and the rushes began once again . This time the town was surveyed, but more attention was being paid to Broken Hill some 25 miles away where larger and more significant ore discoveries were being made there.
This bought about a very quick decline in the population of over 3000 at its peak to very few inhabitants as the focus was shifted to Broken Hill and its money making potential. Also adding to the decline was the Tramway that travelled between Broken Hill and Cockburn in South Australia, via Silverton was closed down.

SOLITARY CHURCH SILVERTON N.S.W.

This is definately the "outback town" with its amazingly clear blue skies and its deep red earth . To look around here is to hear only the birds and the wind. Silvertons surrounding district looks dry and foreboding to look out over the Mundi Mundi Plains with hardly a tree to be seen. What it must have looked like before all the beautiful trees that were here were cut down to go down underground in the mines for shoring up the mineshafts. One has to wonder !!. The Company that started out in Broken Hill as BHP (Broken Hill Proprietry) is now the biggest mining company in the world. One again wonders why this devistated landscape could not be re-generated and re-forrested by this mining giant with some of its huge wealth.!!!

SILVERTON HOTEL...SILVERTON

Located here in Silverton is a really Iconic pub.. The Silverton Hotel. to stop by for a beer or two is a must especially in the heat of the day. This unforgiving landscape and its unique location has been the scene of many movies being made here ie: Mad Max , Razorback, A Town like Alice, and more. Silverton town is a filmakers delight.
There are things to do also in the town as there are many art galleries. Silverton has become a very popular place for artists to live and display their work in their Galleries. Silverton gets extremely hot in the summer months and precautions should be taken out here.

A little History of Silverton
There was a special incident that happened in Broken Hill in 1915 that created a huge public outcry and this was The First Moslem terrorist plot and attack in Australias history. Known as The Battle of Broken Hill Massacre and believed to politically motivated by Australias part in the war in Turkey. On New Years day the first of January 1915 two Afghan former camel drivers living in Broken Hill one of which was an ice cream vendor the other a butcher. Orchestrated an attack on a picnic train that every New years Day travelled to Silverton from Broken Hill bringing its 1200 revellers on 40 open ore trucks for their picnic. The two men positioned themselves and awaited the train and on its arrival opened fire on the pinic 'ers. This created huge mayhem on the train and after killing four and wounding seven both men were shot by police.
