"WINDSOR WESTERN SYDNEY NEW SOUTH WALES" Windsor by DennyP
Windsor Travel Guide: 4 reviews and 8 photos
Located about 60 kilometers from Sydney's city centre This really historical town is definately worth a visit. The drive from Parramatta did not take long as it was only about 30 kilometers..The main Roads to Windsor have lately been upgraded with special bus lanes that are beside the highway and are
X-Press to/from Parramatta. Many residents commute to Parramatta and the City to work daily. There also is a good suburban train that goes. to/from the city.
This is a very popular town for visitors and parking was at a premium near the town centre...although, if you want to park away from the city centre and walk (as I did) there is plenty of parking places..
I must say I was taken immediately at the many fine examples of fine Georgian and Early Victorian architechture that still exists in Windsor. Some are national trust but most are in private hands and only the facades can be viewed from the street.
The then Governor Lachlan Maquarie was very impressed with this area around the Hawkesbury Shire and decided that he would travel around looking at a few local areas for five towns that he chose and named for the area. The five Macquarie Towns are, Richmond ,Windsor , Castlereagh , Pitt Town , and Wilberforce. Originally this area was called "Green Hills"settled in early 1809, but the Governor thought that there was a big resemblance and similarity with The Town with the same name in England and so renamed it..
The towns that the Governor chose were poorly located and many suffered in huge distructive floods. The biggest being in 1799 with flood levels over 50 feet. The places were on a flood plain ,and were moved to higher ground. One such building that was located at the highest point was St.Mathews Anglican Church and in the big flood of 1867 this was for the local residents an important location for refuge. This particular church was designed by the famous convict architect Francis Greenway whos implication in so many of the settlements iconic pieces of architechture is so well known.
The most important reason that Governor Lachlan Maquarie favoured this area so much was that he was taken by the fertile land of the area with great and important agricultural prospects. This was extremely important as Sydney Town settlement was not doing well in that respect due to its shortage of water.
Western Sydney today is huge as the western Suburbs now are at the foot of the Blue mountains with cities like Parramatta, Blacktown, Penrith having huge populations and it is hard to beleive that 12 &1/2% of the whole of Australias population live in this vast area.
Today this is still a large farming area, with cattle and many forms of agriculture.
This of course is where there is always talk of this being the perfect situation for Sydneys second large airport!! With always lots of stiff opposition.
- Pros:MANY WONDERFUL GEORGIAN AND VICTORIAN BUILDINGS REMAIN
- Cons:MANY DEVISTATING FLOODS
