I'm Scottish born and bred and have never lived anywhere else. Yet it took me 26 years to make it to the north of Scotland to see some of the Highlands for the first time! Its some of the most beautiful scenery I have seen anywhere - well so far! However, there is also a lot more to my country than that - the big cities like Edinburgh & Glasgow, smaller towns, little villages, the rolling hills of the lowlands, lots of history.. Now I'm a bit older I have really learned to appreciate how lucky I am to have all this on my doorstep!
A few years ago I had planned to spend my holidays in the USA but in the end that fell through and last minute I planned a road trip up to the north of Scotland for a week. It was the first real roadtrip I'd taken and I loved it. I could stop where I wanted and take lots of pictures and I got to see some more of my country! What could be better?
2001:
Loch Lomond --> Oban --> Glen Coe --> Loch Ness --> Carbisdale Castle --> Dornoch --> Inverness --> Pitlochry
Three years ago I went on another road trip and, although shorter, saw even more places I hadn't been to before - lochs, mountains, towns, ancient sites - many of which I have mentioned on this page or have separate pages for. I'm sure I'll go on many more in the future as I've barely touched the far north or the east coast yet!!
That trip took me to:
2003:
Loch Lomond & Balloch --> Loch Awe & Loch Etive --> Oban --> Isle of Mull --> Kilmartin --> Inveraray --> Loch Fyne & Loch Long
- Pros:Stunning scenery & friendly people!
- Cons:Weather!

What a FANTASTIC page! My fiance is Scottish (Edinburgh) yet I still haven't been to Scotland... hoping to visit next year, and your tips will certainly help! Thanks for the great tips / Jess :-)
Excellent write on your home country. I agree about Loch Ness not being the prettiest and I never saw that monster either!!
Such a wonderful tour through Scotland! Wonderful page Heather! And agreeing with you on Loch Ness, maybe it is the most famous one, but certainly not the most beautiful loch in Scotland.
great scotland page. i didn't know much about bonny scotland before i've visited it last summer. now, i just LOVE it!!!
Should have read your tips before I went instead of after!
Scotland is truly amazing isn't it!!! Your picture of Glencoe really took me back to that amazing place!
I liked the way in which New Lanark is tucked away in the Clyde valley beneath Lanark. Just wish they'd made an accessible path to the Clyde falls :-(
Heather, Excellent pictures and tips. I've been to England many times but I need to make it to Scotland. Ken
