My Travel History I would like to start by saying that I come from a family of great travellers... But that's just not true. In truth, my folks and my siblings were real "home-bodies" and I was the "black-sheep" of the family; the one that broke the shackles of regular home life. As a rug-rat, I was always away on camp or staying overnight at friends houses so the travel bug hit me at an early age. At the age of nineteen I made my first trip OS (overseas.)
Like most Aussies, my first OS experience was to Bali, the magical island in the Indonesian Archipeligo, famous for great beaches, surf, Friendly natives, cheap t-shirts and drunken tourists! That was the start of my International travel and I had the time of my life over there. Next was a big trip to NZ with my life partner. We spent 4 years there and eventually came back home to Oz in 1994 to settle down to typical suburban life with a house a car and a home mortgage. Boring!
We went back to Bali, of course, but it was at a time when political tension was at its highest point and it was not nearly as enjoyable as my first time around. I got a really bad case of food poisoning and struggled for a few days and it was a really bad experience. A couple of days in Ubud Bali did wonders and the trip finished well.
Next was Bangkok and Koh Samui. Probably my best holiday at that point in my life. I found Bangkok to be the most vibrant and exciting city I had visited, despite my friends saying how much smog and how hot it was, I loved it. Koh Samui and the Islands of the Gulf of Siam were just the most relaxing vacations for me. Spent most of the time under the water snorkelling. Great fun.
The next stop fatherhood but before that, we visited a great part of my home country, Port Douglas in far North Queensland, Australia. My first experience scuba diving was on the Great Barrier Reef, just out of Port Douglas. Fantastic! We also did planty of trips around the local area like Mossman Gorge, Atherton Tablelands, Daintree River and Rain Forest, Cape tribulation and Kuranda. Just some of the best places in Australia.
After our first Egglet we had to go back to Port Douglas to experience the beauty of this amazing part of Australia again. Second egglet came a few years later and we settle in to family holidays, local favourite being Philip Island just out of Melbourne. Home of the Penguins and the Moto GP.
Due to work commitments most of my travel has been done solo in the last few years. Hong Kong was my first trip OS for ages and I came home via Cambodia. My long time ambition was to visit Angkor Wat and I did this last year. I was fortuante to have a buisiness trip to Phuket again this year so I took the opportunity to return to Siem Reap and renew my acquaintence with all things Angkorian. I added a quick stop in HCMC to complete my brief tour of SE Asia, 2008. |
