A quirky part of Europe.... When I first landed in Belgrade in November 1998 I was swindled by a taxi driver. This may well happen to you too, so call 9801 and save yourself that risk by getting a taxi ride for 10 euros to anywhere in town. However, it must be said that a lot has changed in 10 years for the better. What used to be a complete backwater is now a regenerating urban hub, though the locals will tell you that progress is coming far too slowly, as witnessed by the fact that a new bridge over the Danube has yet to be built after 8 years of 'planning' and that this is the only major European city of its size still without a metro. Belgrade is ideal for a weekend. You can really do no wrong if the weather is on your side. Among the joys of it are the many parks, of which Tasmajdan stands out. You will see locals at rest and play and can grab a bite at the expensive restaurant Madeira which borders the park if your budget allows. There are also impressive buildings which will certainly have your camera clicking, replete with pre-war facades. Some even have bullet marks from the Second World War, evidence of a strategic location that has often worked against Belgrade rather than to its benefit. |
