Kuching, Sarawak

Sarawak is the largest state in Malaysia located on the island of Borneo with an area of 124,450 sq. km. and the home for 1.5 million people of 27 different ethnic groups. Kuching is the capital of the state of Sarawak. The city was voted as one of the most liveable cities in Asia in year 2000 and is the home for approximately 500,000 residents. Kuching is unique in every sense because administratively it is managed by three different municipal councils namely Majlis Bandaran Kucing Selatan (South Kuching City Council), Dewan Bandaraya Kuching Utara (North Kuching City Hall) and Majlis Perbandaran Padawan (Padawan Municipal Council). The city is divided into two halves by the Sarawak river. "Kuching" is "cat" in Malay. It carries the nick name of Cat City because as legend has it the place was infested with cats at the time it was founded by Charles Brooke, the second White Rajah of Borneo, in 1839. But, there are many other versions on the origin of the name being told.

Kuching Waterfront

The river is the focal point with the waterfront promenade being the main attraction and the most visited place in the the city. Surrounded by beautifully landscaped garden the waterfront was opened in 1993 as part of the river beautification and rehabilitation project. It has been proven to be successful that it is now a model for other waterfront projects in Malaysia.

Sampan Crossing

There are many interesting activities along the waterfront. Jetties are built to facilitate movement of people from the city in the south to the traditional Malay village in the north. Colourful wooden boats are used as the main mode of transport to ferry people across. From the city side one could see Fort Margherita, a colonial era citadel, on the opposite bank while enjoying an evening meal at one of the many eating stalls operating along the esplanade.
