Welcome to Dilli!

by shalin - last update: Apr 6, 2001

I've been to Delhi a few times during my short life, primarily because I have tons of relatives there! This time too,I was there for a marriage. All I can say is that I had a fabulous time!!:)

Let me give you a brief History of our capital.Originally(about 1000 B.C),Delhi sprung up on the banks of the river Yamuna, later settlements spread all over.Old Delhi consists of 7 cities(!!)the most famous being Shahjahanabad-named after the great Mughal Emperor,Shahjahan(who also built the Taj Mahal at Agra!)

Finally,Delhi was made capital in 1911,by the British, after more than a 100 yrs rule over it!Even after 1947,when India attained Independance it remains our capital!

Delhi is a fusion of ancient Indian tradition, lotsa yummy food:),modern influence, and weird weather!!The best time to visit New Delhi is between November-early March.During the summer, hot winds sweep North India, and temperatures reach the late 40's(in C!!)Sunstrokes are very common,so I really wouldn't recommend a trip in this uncomfortable weather! In winter however, one must carry woollens!Odd,huh?
Well,That's Delhi!:)
