Greece is located in south-eastern Europe. It is bordering Bulgaria, Albania and Macedonia to the north and Turkey to the east. The capital of Greece is Athens which is also its largest city.
Greece is a member of European Union (EU) since 1981 and a member of NATO since 1952. The official laguage of Greece is Greek. It has a total area of approximately 132,000 square kilometres. Greece has a population of approximately eleven million inhabitants. The Parthenon of the Acropolis in Athens (photo above) is a famous tourist attraction in Athens.
The following were two of our favourite attractions in Greece:
Parthenon was a Greek temple built in the 5th century BC in honour of the Greek goddess Athena on the summit of Acropolis in central Athens. It was constructed in white marble in Classical style of architecture. The west and east sides (width) each consist of 8 Doric columns and the north and south sides (length) each consist of 17 columns although some columns had been destroyed on the south side.
The Parthenon is now undergoing restoration and reconstruction undertaken by the Greek Ministry of Culture. Unfortunately you will see cranes and scaffolding on the site for a while. You can observe our present pictures with lots of scaffolding compare to our old pictures taken two decades ago which was free of scaffolding.
Parthenon is the most famous temple in the Acropolis. It is certainly one of the best cultural monuments in the world. The temple had been used as a treasury, a fortress, a Christian church during different era and a mosque during the Ottoman era. It is measuring approximately 70 meters by 30 meters and is approximately 14 meters high.
Parthenon was designed by Greek architects Ictinos and Callicrates. The name Parthenon was derived from the words Athena Parthenos which means Athena the virgin. The interior of the building is now out of bound to visitors due to reconstruction. It is certainly a 'must-visit' attraction for those visiting the city of Athens. Parthenon and the Acropolis were listed as world heritage sites by UNESCO in the year 1987.
The Temple of Erechtheion (or Erechtheum) is situated on the northern section of the Acropolis in the heart of Athens. It is the youngest of the temples in the Acropolis. It is also the holiest of all the Ancient Greek temples. The temple was designed by Mnesicles and was constructed in 405 BC to replace an older temple built on the same site. The name Erechtheion was derived from the name Erechtheus, the legendary king of Athens. Therefore the temple was constructed in his honour.
Temple of Erechtheion was constructed of white marble and limestone in Ancient Greek Ionic style of architecture. It consists of several compartments with tall columns on the north, west and east sides. It was constructed on an uneven ground resulting in the building with different heights at different compartments. The temple was later used as a Christian church and Turkish harem during Ottoman era.
The southern porch of the temple consists of six draped female figures (known as Karyatides) holding the roof on their heads. These six female figures are among the most photographed objects in the Acropolis. However these are only replicas as the originals have been placed in the museums. Five of the originals are located at Acropolis Museum in Athens and one in the British museum.
