The railway station in Lausanne

Lausanne railway station
Lausanne is a very hilly lake resort town, situated midway along the northern shore of Lac Léman (Lake of Geneva). The difference of elevation is about 500 meters between the lakeshore at Ouchy and its northern edge at Le Mont.

Population 130 000. French-speaking. University town. Many well known schools. Many come here to study French.

The old town dates back to medieval times. Lausanne is located at the limit between the wind-growing regions of Lavaux to the east and la Côte, to the west.

The whole region by the Lake Léman from Geneva to Villeneuve is called the Swiss Riviera. The beaches and lake views are great!
Le Grand-Pont, La Place Bel-Air.

The centre of Lausanne

This picture is from the middle of the centre. It shows the bridge "le Grand -Pont" to the right and the Place Bel-Air with the Bel-Air tower straight ahead.

The shopping area is situated all around here, Metropole 2000, to the left, and shopping streets like Rue de l'Ale, Rue Haldimand to the right.

La place St. François and, Rue de Bourg, Rue Centrale are other well-known shopping districts.
Lausanne Cathedral

Lausanne Cathedral

Lausanne Cathedral seen from behind the "Grand-Pont".

The Cathedral was consecrated in 1275.

A new underground is under construction in Lausanne, and will hopefully be finished before Christmas 2008. It will travel all the way from Epalinges
(north) to the lakefront at Ouchy (south). It can be taken from the station, so it will be very practical for getting all around the city.
