Like many other people, I was pickpocketed on a metro near the Eiffel Tower. Someone blocked the top of an upward escalator in front of me (pretended to drop a ticket), and in the resulting confusion a guy behind grabbed money from my pocket. I suspect there was at least one further guy involved, too. So be very vigilant, don't carry too much money, keep it secure and away from outside pockets (money-belt etc.) and be wary of ANYONE distracting you by dropping things (coins, tickets), pushing/bumping you, asking you for directions etc. And don't flash a wad of money around at any stage (when paying for stuff etc.). All obvious things - but it can spoil your trip if you're not careful. By the way, the same tips apply to Sol, in central Madrid!
