Pueblo Antigua - San Jose

Friday and Saturday nights only.

Do find the time to take in this show. It is three hours of fun, frolic and food. Need I say more?

There is an ancient, highly decorated bus that takes you from the parking lot to the action. A welcoming drink awaits you as you enter the front gate. Two attractive senoritas in native garb act as your guides and are very willing to strike a pose when your camera goes up.

After a discussion of the history of San Juan, you are ushered into the Fire Station turned auditorium for a hour long show of song and native dance. Should you be as lucky as I, you'll be invited on the stage to dance with one of the performers. This is the cherry on top of the cake.

Then it is over to the lunch hall for an authentic meal of typical Costa Rican foods-hot and tasty. Your dining experience is enhanced by local music performed by three costumed hombres playing a six foot long marimba .

After the meal, there is a carriage to take you for a ride through the pueblo, that's "town" in Espanol, a demonstration of sugar cane grinding and a discussion of the origins of the colorful ox cart wheels-a calling card for Costa Rica. All these activities are at a happy, high-energy pace.

To top it all, the proceeds from these performances benefit the children's hospital which is rated as the fifth best in the world. All of the performers are unpaid volunteers. So it's kuddos to all of them!

One fun evening for a worthy cause. I plan to experience these performances as often as I am in San Juan and hope to see you there.
