How to Build a Shear Delight
1 - Find a remote area with plenty of space.
2 - Preferrably, an area with a view
3 - Better yet, an area that is a heavily wooded area
4 - Still better yet, find an area with really tall trees
Now the work can begin
5 - Build stands high up in the trees
6 - String half inch steel cable between the trees -some 150 feet or more apart - terminating at the stands
7 - Tighten the cables until there is little sag between the trees
8 - Gather the necessary gear including hard hats, heavy leather gloves, body harnesses with large metal rings, heavy duty pulleys with handles to hang on, etc.
9 - Put out signs advertising a Jungle Zip Line
10 - Let nature take its course.
This is what was done in San Lorenzo and what attracted Camilla and me to it.
What happened was shear delight. Of course, there was a learning curve where I forgot to brake and almost slid into a tree. Followed by extreme caution where I stopped hard, short of the stand and lost my hard hat into the rain forest some seventy feet below me. Then I mastered the zip line and it was mine. Travelling at a high rate of speed (maybe 10-15 mph), I learned to love the adventure. The trill of speed and the wind in my face were enough to addict me.
Later a tarzan swing offered us the opportunity to swing with complete abandon some 80 feet above the trees, out some 50 feet so we could practice our Tarzan routines. Why should kids have all the fun?
Let's do it again. Will you join me?
This joy can only be matched by the Shotover Jet Boat ride in Queenstown, New Zealand.
