First stop on our Honeymoon

by Sweensie - last update: Jul 8, 2008

San Francisco

We went to San Francisco for the first stop on our honeymoon, stayed for a week. We found it a very vibrant city and were surprised that the centre was so walkable. We walked from Market Street down to Fishermans wharf the first day (and yes, took the cable car back!).
The public transport was excellent, there was NO traffic in the city the whole time we were there. We got the cable cars or the "F" all the time. Didnt take the BART this time round.
China town is a great place for food, more on this in my tips.
Shopping is very good, lots of choice, and surprisingly, there were a lot of british shops too, which I found a bit strange. We both got a few pairs of shoes, and with the exchange rate dollar to euro, we really saved on money. I didn't see any Irish shops as such, but Anthroplogie was so like Avoca it was unbelievable!

The homeless

Even though we were warned about the amount of homeless people begging in SF, we still were a bit shocked at the amount of them and the pure agressive nature of them in the way they begged. We gave a few dollars the first day but that did it for us!
I always prefer to give food and a hot drink to people who beg, rather than money.

Cable Cars

The cable cars are a great experience. We were lucky to be at the turn around at Market street and got our "passport" the first day-the ticket that allows you access to all the public transport-we bought a 7 day ticket and used it every day, sometimes several times. The queue for the cable cars at the turn arounds could be long at times, the trick seemed to be to walk up a stop or two as you could jump onto the side then if there was no room inside. A little bit daunting hanging off the side going down those steeep hills though, be warned!!!
Some of the cable car guys are real characters.
