  • The Cibeles fountain shows the goddess Cibeles from Greek mythology that represented fertility. The goddess is seating in a chariot pulled by two lions. The
    Cibeles fountain was built in the reign of Charles (Carlos) III between 1777 and 1782. The fountain of Cibeles is a place where fans of Real Madrid meet to celebrate their victories.

  • This statue is in the artificial lake in the Parque del Retiro. The statue was erected in 1922 by King Alfonso's mother. At this lake you can hire a rowing boat.

  • Madrid's cathedral, The Cathedral de la Almudena, took more than 100 years to complete. Construction was started in 1883 It was finally consecrated by pope John-Paul II in 1993.

  • The Palacio de Comunicaiones was built between 1905 and 1917. It was the headquaters of the Post Office. Once inside the Palacio de Comunicaciones there is the Postal and Telegraphic Museum, which displays the history of the postal system, from the 18th century postal pigeons to the modern communication satellites.

  • Banco de España or Bank of Spain was built between 1882 and 1891. Thirty metres below the surface is an area where the bank stored its gold, before modern security was installed, the room was flooded in case of danger.

  • In 1560 King Philip II asked Juan de Herrera, architect of the Escorial, to turn the market place into a real square. The square nowadays has many cafes, and during the day has many street entertainers. It could be said is the centre of Madrid.

  • This palace was constructed between 1738 and 1745 on the site of a former palace which was destroyed by a fire in 1734. Carlos III made this palace his residence. It is the official residence of the King of Spain, even though he does not live in this palace it is used for official ceremonies and ceremonies.
